Taiwan
Formosa The former name was given by Portuguese seafarers. The almond-shaped island is 36 000 square kilometers. The western part is a broad coastal plain that gradually rises and goes over to forested plateaus and the mountain range that extends from north to south along the length of the island. The highest peaks reach up to around 4000 meters altitude. East of it goes steeply down the gorges and fast-flowing rivers and streams down to the Pacific.
