Barcelona
The city is located on the Mediterranean coast between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs, about 120 miles south of the Pyrenees mountain range. With its 1.6 million inhabitants, Barcelona is Spain's second largest city after Madrid and the largest city of Catalonia. Greater Barcelona has over 5 million people, representing around 70% of Catalonia's population.

Barcelona is a major economic center and one of Europe's most important ports. The city is also a popular tourist destination. It has a rich cultural heritage, including several architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Barcelona is the birthplace of artist Joan Miró and Antoni Tàpies. The city hosted the Summer Olympics in 1992, and is home to one of the most accomplished football team, FC Barcelona.

Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate, with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. January and February are the coldest months, with average temperatures of around 10 ° C. July and August are the hottest months. When the average temperature of around 25 ° C.

Tourism has grown to become one of the city's main economic resources, especially after they hosted the Olympic Games in 1992. Barcelona is currently one of Europe's most popular destinations, and has surpassed Paris in terms of number of visitors, just behind London and New York worldwide. Moreover, it is the city in Europe that has had the greatest increase in the number of tourists in recent years. In 2005 visited over 5 million tourists town, 11% more than in 2004. The hotels registered more than 11 million overnight stays in 2005, 8 percent more than the year before.

60% of the 5 million came to town to spend some days there, the rest came for business or international conventions. In 2006, Barcelona hotels accommodate more than 50,000 people, twice as many as in 1996. In addition to the foreign tourists who were registered at hotels in Barcelona, there were also a large number of tourists who stay overnight elsewhere in Catalonia who visited the city. Catalonia was visited by the 13.5 million tourists in 2005. To these figures must also add all the thousands of tourists who came from the rest of Spain.

The Spanish cuisine is many things - the rustic country kitchen to the south coast and the treasury of fish and shellfish. But it is also nueva cocina vasca - the new Basque cuisine in northern Spain, as a whole generation of chefs have placed Spain well and thoroughly in the gastronomic world map. The restaurant several years in a row was named the world's best, is the star El Bullo, located outside Barcelona. But a visit to the Catalan capital also belongs Gaudí's fairytale architecture of the Eixample district, where you will find the mastodon and yet pre-built cathedral La Sagrada Familia. Barcelona's Rambla - the hectic pedestrian - have experienced, and the same applies to the medieval town center Barri Gotic with the great designer shops and historic monuments and El Raval's mix of bohemian bars and prestigious art palaces.
