Niger
Niger is a country in west Africa, north of Nigeria and Benin to the east of Mali and Burkina Faso, south of Algeria and Libya and west of Chad. This country should not be confused with Nigeria. The country is named after the Niger River. The capital city is Niamey. The country is one of the world's poorest countries.
world's poorest countries
The northern regions of Niger extends into the Sahara desert, while the southern areas are part of the Sahel savanna landscape, which is the rainy season between May and September. Rainfall, however, can vary a great deal from year to year. The northern areas are, however, very little rainfall. Niamey, located far south of the country has an average annual rainfall of 554 mm.

Desert areas in the Sahara covers two-thirds of Niger. The climate is hot and mostly dry, but it varies greatly both by season and region. The whole of the northern part of the country consists of a dry upland area, which is part of a mountain range stretching from Algeria to Chad. To the east lies the desert, but the dunes and vast areas of rock. Only in the southwest, where the Niger River crosses the country, there is fertile soil, which flooded during the short rainy season.

Niger has a rich flora, with many kinds of trees and date palms on the edge of the desert. Of wild animals there are antelopes, lions, buffalo and a few elephants. There are also a few giraffes which is west Africa's last herd. Along the river Niger, there are crocodiles and hippos. Many species are under threat, but it's done very little to protect plant and animal life in the country.

There is increasing concern is the development of Nigeria. It can not be excluded that the Nigerian Islamist terrorist organization Boko Haram is active in in the country.
