The city is named after Queen Adelaide, William IV's consort. Adelaide was established as a planby in 1836. William Light, one of the founders, was inspired by William Penn and the garden city movement, which played a major role in city planning.

Adelaide has three public and two private universities. University of Adelaide, with 20,478 students is Australia's third oldest university that has five campuses in the metropolitan area. University of South Australia with 30901 students and Flinders University with 16237 students.
