Thailand is also known as Siam, which was the country's official name until 11 May 1949. Thai is also the name of the largest ethnic group in Thailand, and another (and perhaps more likely) interpretation of the name Thailand is that it means "Thai people's land."

Thailand has an area of 514,000 km ², making it the world's 50th country in terms of area and population wise is it 20 space, with a population of 65,493,296 inhabitants.

Thailand can be divided into four areas by the physical geography: Mountains areas in the north, Khoratplatået the east, plains in the middle of the country and the Malay Peninsula. Thailand's northern region consists of mountain, Doi Inthanon with the 2576 m. as the highest point. Mountain chains are intersected by fertile river valleys. In the Northeast (Isan) dominates Khoratplatået, bounded on the east by the Mekong River. Thailand's central part consists mostly of flat river valley Chao Phraya River. In these areas, north of Bangkok, is the country's main agricultural areas, called "Thailand's rice bowl." It has been dug more channels to enhance the possibilities for irrigation of rice.

The south consists of the narrow Kra Isthmus, that widens out towards the Malay Peninsula. There is a lush, tropical and hilly landscape, framed by bright plains with wide beaches. Coast, particularly the west coast, is characterized by the many islands which Phuket is the largest.

Thailand has a rich flora and fauna, including about 10 000 plant species and over 900 bird species. Previously, the country was covered by tropical forests and teak trees from Thailand was world famous. The heavy forest logging, however, decreased forest stock profusely. Vegetariasjonen generally characterized by the tropical climate, but Khoratplatået in the northeast have steppe-/savanne-vegetariasjon.

Major cities beside Bangkok Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, Nakhon Sawan, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani, Phuket, Chanthaburi and Hat Yai (Songkhla).
