Saint John is the smallest of the three main islands of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The island was formerly a Danish-Norwegian colony as part of the Danish West Indies. It lives today 4157 people on the island. The island has no airport, so one must use the boat to get there. There are daily ferries from St Thomas and Tortola.

St. John was first inhabited by the Arawaks who came from Colombia and Venezuela around AD 300 Arawaks inhabited the island until around 1300, when they were displaced by the more aggressive and warlike kariberne.

Christopher Columbus discovered the Virgin Islands on his second voyage to the New World in 1493. He named the islands "las Once mil Virgenes", or the Virgin Islands, in honor of Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins, who according to legend was her martyrs.

The inhabitants of the Virgin Islands are now American citizens, even if they are not allowed to vote in presidential elections. Virgin Islands have representatives in Congress, but these are non-voting.

The main export article from St. John were former sugar cane, which was produced with slave labor. The sugar industry collapsed in the late 1800s after slavery was abolished in 1848. St. John's economy is now almost entirely based on tourism.

Some of the most popular beaches in the Caribbean is located on the northern part of the island. The most famous beach is Trunk Bay, considered one of the "Ten Best Beaches in the World" by Condé Nast Traveler magazine.
