Rennes is the capital of the French Ministry Ille- et- Vilaine, France. The old city center is built on a hill, with the north side being more elevated than the south side. It is at the confluence of two rivers: the Ille and Vilaine. Rennes origin goes back to Roman times, and the University of Rennes is from 1735.

Rennes has a very large IT industry and science park Rennes- Atalante houses laboratories and research departments for a number of French and global technology companies.

Rennes is classified as a city of art and history. The historic center is located on the former plan of the ramparts. There is a difference between the northern and the southern city center because of the 1720 fire. It destroyed most of the half-timbered house in the northern part of the city. The modifications were made in stone, on a grid plan. The southern part, the poorest at this time, was not rebuilt.

Plaza area is built on the classic architecture.

The place around Dec Lices is full of hotels particuliers. Raill -du- Baty is tilholdtstedet to the large weekly market, Marché des Lices.
